Sun Pharma to launch mobile app to connect doctors and asthma patients
In the first-of-its-kind initiative, the 'Respitrack' App developed by Sun Pharma will
enable doctors to track treatment progress of patients, and increase compliance
to medication for better management of asthma, where adherence to treatment is
a challenge.
As part of its efforts to leverage mobile
technology to boost treatment in chronic and lifestyle diseases, Sun
Pharmaceuticals is rolling out a mobile application to connect doctors and
patients. In the first-of-its-kind initiative, the 'Respitrack' App developed
by Sun Pharma will enable doctors to track treatment progress of patients, and
increase compliance to medication for better management of asthma, where
adherence to treatment is a challenge. The model will be replicated later in diabetes
and other lifestyle ailments.
Most pharma companies in India are largely
focussed on education for doctors, like e-detailing (with digital tablets), or
disease awareness for patients, in the digital space, for example, through
facebook campaigns, as direct-to-consumer drug advertising and promotion are
banned. Globally too, drug companies are increasingly switching to digital
channels like emails, web-sites, apps and text messages to engage with
physicians, as against a direct interaction, due to compliance requirements.
According to WHO, India has an estimated
15-20 million asthmatic patients, of which over 50% do not adhere to the
treatment regimen. A majority of the non-adherence is on account of the
patient's forgetfulness to take medicines on time, and due to inadequate
understanding of the prescribed treatment.
Says Abhay Gandhi, CEO India Business Sun
Pharma "Such non-adherence could have greater adverse implications on the
patient's health in the long run. Through RespiTrack, we are making a beginning
to boost patient's awareness, and resultant adherence to treatment regimen''.
RespiTrack aims to address reasons leading to
non-adherence by improving compliance through recurring medication reminders,
pre-programmed alerts and over-the-air review by the doctor. It allows
monitoring of asthma attacks, symptoms and medication, and enables patients to
record time, duration and triggers of attacks on the mobile app. Through
RespiTrack, a doctor can access his patient's details through a personalized
tracker module which is directly synced with the patient's app.
The app can be downloaded by patients and
doctors free of cost, he said, adding patients can pre-programme their
medication, irrespective whether those medicines belong to Sun Pharma or any
other company.
"Asthma is the first ailment we are
targeting through this mobile application. We will create a portfolio of mobile
and digital applications across chronic and acute therapies to enable patients
to connect with doctors and ensure compliance to treatment, by leveraging
mobile technology extensively", Gandhi said.
